Tugboats, the semi's of the ocean. They pass Powell River pulling logbooms, construction barges, scows of hogfuel and chips for the local paper mill, train barges, barges loaded with
semi-trailers and chemical tankers and more. And I take their pictures as they pass.

Here you will find some of the photos I have taken of those tugboats as they pull their tows up and down Malaspina Strait and the surrounding waters. Big ones and little ones, good looking tugs and some not so.
I like them all, and if you like tugs - including tugs converted to other uses - I invite you to have a look.

Rapid Providour

Rapid Providour - 2013-06-04

Rapid Towing's Rapid Providour - she comes by Powell River only now and again, but each time I've seen her she leaves her boom floating on the Strait and comes into the South Harbour to fuel up. Only tug that I've seen do that. She was the Island Providour when she sank in Sunderland Channel, north of Campbell River, in March of 2009. Pulling a tow of two barges - one a camp barge and the other carrying construction equipment - in a storm when a gust of wind caught the barges, swung them around, and pulled the tug under. It can be a risky occupation. Two crew on board made it safely to a nearby island. She was raised and salvaged that same year.
